Usenet Download Guide

Good torrent trackers are getting harder and harder to find nowadays. Many people are looking for new ways to download files in a secure way. I am confident that Usenet is the future of file sharing, much due to the fact that every session is fully encrypted and no seeding is required. Usenet is a newsgroups system from Internet’s early years, it was a way for people to communicate, share and discuss news. If you want to learn more about usenet newsgroup history then click here. The great part about it is that it has a built in function to embed files with posts which allows everyone to upload files. Usenet is built with a great amount of servers linked together, kind of like a RAID0 for harddrives hardrive. Most Usenet providers have their own servers but with the link system every file gets uploaded to all servers that keep that “Category”. Free usenet server access is easy to find and it’s important to have a good provider because they are responsible for which Categories they subscribe to and how long they keep the data. A bad provider will result in shorter retention of files and alot of corrupt files, this is why you shouldn’t just get the cheapest one available.

To get started with Usenet you’ll need a good Usenet newsgroups provider, my favorite is Newshosting Usenet Download Guide. They offer a retention of 452 days, which means every file that is uploaded will stay on the server for 452 days. They have no issues with corrupt files from my experience and they offer great speed. I can without any trouble use my entire 100 Mbit/s connection when downloading. Use this link for a free of charge 2 weeks trial: Newshosting 14 days free trial Usenet Download Guide. If you aren’t happy with the service you can cancel within 2 weeks and it won’t cost you a dime. I recommend you go with the NH Unlimited subscription since you really don’t need more than 30 connections to get 100% use of your internet connection. NH unlimited gives you unlimited downloads and unlimited speed for less than $15 a month.

Now you need a Usenet client to download the files, I will review 4 good clients in this guide:-

1: Grabit The easiest and most simple Usenet download client, it is totally free but also the most ineffective. I would only recommend you to use this client if you if you feel that the others are too complicated to use.

2: News Leecher A great beginners client, alot of advanced features without being complicated to set up. It costs $19.99 year or $2.99 a month if you buy it but there’s a free trial which is what we will use to start with.

3: SABnzbd+ The most advanced but also the best Usenet Newsgroups download client, works on almost all computer platforms and is totally free. I will not go in to how to set it up in this guide because that would make it too long. I suggest you google a tutorial or use trial and error. I use it and I love it.

4: Newsbin Pro Seen by some as the ultimate Usenet robot. It automatically downloads and combines multi-part posts. That part is really useful if you are downloading large files. Newsbin costs $35 for a one time license – there is a free trial option so that you can test it out before you fully commit.

Start with installing News Leecher and the open the program. Click on Manager and the Add. News Hosting servers: NH Unlimited: * hostname: unlimited.newshosting.com * port: 119 * max connections: 30 * standard ports: 119, 23, 25, 80, 3128 * SSL ports: 563 Europe: NH Unlimited * hostname: news.ams.newshosting.com * port: 119 * max connections: 30 * standard ports: 119, 23, 25,80, 3128 * SSL ports: 563

Lastly you need NZB files, they are like torrent files but for Usenet Newsgroups. They help make sure that you get the files you want to download and nothing else. There are many NZB-”trackers” for Usenet downloading but these are the ones I use:-

1: NZBMatrix It’s free to register an account but to get access to the entire database you need to donate $10, a one time fee for a life time account. That fee is definitely worth paying. This site has everything. Supports HTTPS.

2: NZBs.org Requires a free registration before you can download NZB files, In my opinion not as good as a donated NZBMatrix account but very good. Only shows scene releases.

3: NZBMovieSeeker Doesn’t require any registration, great for finding a good movie to watch when you don’t know what you want to watch. Only scene releases. Not as big database as NZBMatrix. A bit complicated to download from.

4: NZBsRus Built as a torrent tracker, so torrent users will be very familiar. Free to register but require donation to get full content. Great design and functions, probably the best designed of them all. Function to filter only scene releases. Not as big database as NZBMatrix.

5: Newzbin The absolute best Usenet Newsgroups NZB tracker site. Biggest database with alot of extra functions and external plugins. Supports HTTPS. But it is private so it requires an invite from a member, it’s free to register but to use most functions you need a subscription for about $2 per month. This tracker is totally unnecessary for most people that only want mainstream stuff but it’s great for people looking for more unique downloads.

6: TVNZB I don’t use this tracker myself because I like NZBMatrix more. No registration required.

Find what you are looking for, download the NZB file and choose to open it with News Leecher automatically in your browser or download it to your harddrive and double click on the file. Newsleecher should now download the file automatically from your Usenet Newsgroups provider, verify it, repair if need and extract it. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride.

I hope you enjoyed this guide and I wish you good luck with your secure downloads from Usenet. If you have any questions please comment below and I will answer as soon as possible.

basically, I have to pay to use usenet .. is there any alternative ????
I registered with NZBMatrix .. pay them 10 $ for nothing other than retention … and then again I have to register with a server provider and pay the fee .. whats the use …

fakeera December 23, 2009 at 12:01 pm

are there any free servers, that we can use to connect to usenet ??? or we have to pay for that …….. I am using SABnzbd+ .. can you guide me ????

kman December 23, 2009 at 7:25 pm

Yes I am sorry to say but you have to pay for Usenet. It’s worth it though, try the free trial. You don’t have to donate to NZBMatrix but I highly recommend it. If you don’t want to donate I suggest you use NZBs.org instead

fakeera December 24, 2009 at 11:47 am

no, its not about the donation .. all I m saying is … are there any free servers .. I am ready to donate to NZBMatrix … thats not the problem .. I donate on torrent sites ….. so donating on a single site to get all I need is not a problem .. all I need is a free server and I am unable to find one …

Hi.
Sorry there aren’t any free usenet servers worth mentioning. The storage and bandwidth the Usenet server need to work properly is far too great for them to be able to run it free of charge. Just think about how many TB of storage they need to be able to store every file uploaded for over 400 days.

Take care.

Yeah you have to pay but the quality of the service is excellent. The benefits of the service far far outweigh the small costs. Give the free trial a shot and see what you think before fully comitting

hi, thanks for the guide I found it on the net whilst I was looking for free usenet servers. I have signed up for the free trail with newshosting but I am having problems downloading using the grabit client.

I can find things loads of things I want to download but the download never seems to ’start’ if that makes sense.

Any help is much appreciated :)

Hey jools,

I had a similar problem once before with a torrent client. This can happen when either the port is not open in the firewall or the programme client is blocked by a firewall (could even be windows firewall).

Please check that the client or port is not blocked and try again? But I have to say you should think about using SABnzbd+. Thats what I use and it’s great (and free).

Let me know how you get on?

just a quick comment to let you know that I managed to get it working, my firewall just needed tweaking!

Thanks so much for the quick help dude !!!!!!!

what about other usenet newsgroups? you have only really mentioned newshosting, are they the only decent one? I found on google other ones called Giganews, do you happen to know if they are any good?

kman January 2, 2010 at 1:31 pm

hey dorsty,

Of course there are many usenet providers out there. Newshosting was the one I choose because I wanted to write up a simple guide for people to follow.

I will make up some comparison tables for other premium newsgroups providers and post it up here in a day or so, it’s Saturday here so time to relax :)

please check back in a couple of days time…
